What a Bill of Sale is
It's the receipt for the sale. A Bill of Sale records who sold what to whom, for how much, and on what date - the vehicle's make, model, year, VIN, registration and odometer, with both parties' details.
Both parties should keep a copy. It is the seller's evidence of when the car stopped being theirs, and the buyer's evidence of what they paid and what they were told. Each side gets the same PDF here.
It is not a transfer of registration. Transferring the rego is a separate step with your state or territory's transport authority, on their form and to their deadline. Lodge that as well - a Bill of Sale on its own does not do it.
Buying rather than selling? A MotorRegistry vehicle history report tells you whether there is finance owing on the car, whether it has been written off or stolen, and what its odometer history looks like - before you sign anything.
